If you love cornrows and you want to learn how to do it yourself like a pro, here’s a detailed step-by-step guide for you, including the most important things to consider when installing this hairstyle.

If you have no idea how to braid cornrows, after reading this article, all you’ll need will be practice, patience, and your best disposition until you’ll be able to reproduce any pattern you see or let your creativity drive you into new art-piece designs of cornrow hairstyles.

Steps for Braiding Cornrows

Braiding cornrows might seem complicated at first glance, but with a bit of patience and practice, you’ll get the hang of it in no time.

From mapping out your desired pattern to nailing the actual braiding technique, we’ve got your back. So, grab your comb and hair clips, and let’s get those hands braiding cornrows!

Step 1 – Wash hair the night before

Make sure the hair is washed the night before braiding. Use conditioner only for dry or low-porosity hair.

Step 2 – Choose the pattern

Choose the pattern, and mentally adapt it to the head particularities and haircut. There are millions of cornrows patterns, varying from the easiest, simple, or classic, like straight lines, to the most complex designs, which can be literally any shape. If you are at the beginning, I’d suggest you avoid picking up a complicated one.

Step 3 – Comb and detangle hair

How to braid cornrows - preparation

Comb the hair. If you need a detangling spray or moisturizing product, be prepared to have and use it.

Step 4 – Section hair for the first braid

Start sectioning the hair for the first braid (or more, if you want to organize the pattern in advance), using a pintail comb. You’ll need to draw perfect, clean lines and follow the direction according to your desired design. Secure the part that you won’t braid yet.

Step 5 – Prepare hair extensions (optional)

If you want to use braiding hair extensions, divide them into small strands because you’ll need to add them gradually into the braid. You can have different sizes of strands, as you’ll use thinner strands for the beginning of the braid, and you can add thicker ones afterward.

Step 6 – Apply edge control gel and other products

Comb the section that you’re about to start braiding, and apply edge control gel along both sides of the path. Use braiding wax, shine gem, or gel for the rest of the hair.

You can use only one product, your favorite one, as well. It is doable without any styling product too, but the hairstyle would last less, and it wouldn’t look that shiny.

Step 7 – Start braiding cornrows

braiding cornrows

Take a small section of hair at the beginning of the braid’s path and divide it into three equal pieces. Hold them separately, and don’t let them fall from your hands. If you want to add braiding hair extensions, grab a thin strand and hold it together with the middle strand.

Cross the right strand of hair (together with the other half of the hair extension if using them) under the middle strand of hair and the left strand under both strands. Get used to switching the fingers so you’ll not lose the strands.

Continue with crossing the middle strand under the right one, and hold it together with a small amount of hair from the braid’s path that you’ll use to continue the braid afterward.

Take a little hair from the left part of the path, the closest possible, and cross it under the middle part together with the left strand.

Add another strand of extensions if you are using them. Continue crossing like that and adding hair from the path (and strands of extension) until the end of the head, when you’ll just braid it normally without adding any small pieces of hair.

Consider braiding as close to the scalp as possible but without tensioning the hair, so the braid will be just perfectly tight.

Step 8 – Secure the braid end

If you are using hair extensions, at the very end of the braid, make a temporary knot by splitting the braid into two sections and pulling the two strands apart from each other several times (like making dreadlocks). If you’re not using braiding hair, secure the braid with rubber bands or other accessories that may serve you.

Step 9 – Repeat steps 4-7 for all sections

Repeat steps from 4 to 7 until there is no section left.

Step 10 – Trim stray hairs

When you finish all the braids, take a pair of scissors and cut the messy hairs which come out of the braids.

If there are big strands of natural hair left out of the braids that you don’t want to cut, then use a crochet latch to grab them and put them back inside the braid.

Step 11 – Dip braid ends in boiled water (if using extensions)

In case you’ve been using hair extensions, prepare some boiled water and a towel. Put the ends of the braids in boiled water and take them out in a towel to get the water out of them (and not to get burned either).

Step 12 – Add finishing products and accessories

adding beads to cornrows

Optionally, you can add foam, hairspray, or other finishing products. Also, if you would like to decorate your braids with accessories (beans, cuffs, and so on), that would be the last thing to do before finishing up your hairdo.

Step 13 – Show off your new hairstyle

Enjoy the results and show off your hairstyle!

Cornrow braid universe is timeless and endless since it is one of the oldest hairstyles, but always in trend, never out of fashion, and what is more, it includes infinite variations of designs.

Don’t lose your patience if it seems difficult for you to braid at the beginning because as soon as your fingers learn how to move in order to create these braids, everything will become a matter of creativity.

FAQs

Do I need to use a comb to add hair when braiding cornrows?

It is up to you, but the cornrow will become a stitch braid if you do that. If you want to see parallel straight lines very clearly, it means you want stitch braids, which is a defined type of cornrow, and for that, you’ll need to use a comb.

For other types of cornrows, you can also add the hair by using your fingers or nails.

How long do cornrows last?

Cornrows last, on average, about two weeks, but they can last up to four weeks, depending on the pattern (how thin the pats are), hair type, care, and the braider’s skills.

Can cornrows damage my hair?

If cornrows are properly braided, and the braids aren’t over-tensed, they would not damage the hair.

During this hairstyle, you’ll still need to wash, nourish and take care of your hair and scalp, for the health and wellbeing of your hair.

Can I make cornrows if I don’t know braiding?

Yes, but you would need to learn the classic three strands braiding, first. If you don’t want to learn how to braid, you could try alternative hairstyles that resemble cornrows such as-

flat twists (twist-braids on the scalp) or, the easiest, rubber band braids – which imply only parting the hair and binding it together with rubber bands in a precise manner.

You have been thinking about getting cornrows, but your primary concern is if your cornrows become bad. You can get a bad result with any hairstyle you choose, and the trick is finding the right braider and the right cornrow style.

Nowadays, anything is possible. We will give you some advice on how to avoid getting bad cornrows.

Why Do Cornrows Become Bad?

bad cornrows
Bad Tight Cornrows

The most common reason people have bad cornrows is that they are too tight, and tight cornrows can lead to hair loss and even a condition called traction alopecia.

Finding a braider who knows how to do cornrows correctly is essential.

Another common reason that people have problems with their cornrows is that they leave them for too long. You should only leave cornrows for six weeks at maximum. When you have cornrows in for too long, they can cause hair damage, tangles, and hair loss.

Another problem can surface when you style the cornrows along your hairline. When the cornrows are too tight, they can pull your hairline back.

You should carefully choose the way you are styling your cornrows and choose looser cornrows.

Examples of Bad Cornrows

How To Avoid Getting Bad Cornrows

There are several things you can do to help make your cornrows look fresh and fantastic.

#1. Hydrate Your Hair

It is crucial to prepare your hair for cornrows. It would be best if you avoided blowdrying but instead hydrated your hair before getting your cornrows. Shampoo and then condition it well. You want to make sure that your roots are healthy before styling.

#2. Not Too Tight

tips to avoid bad cornrows - loose braiding

Cornrows that pull too tight can cause hair loss and scalp damage. You want to ask your stylist to avoid pulling your hair too tight while putting in the cornrows. You should not feel pain or itching after your cornrows get done.

You should give your hair and scalp a break after cornrows. Let your hair flow naturally for a month before redoing your cornrows. Your stylist should change the cornrow pattern so that the same areas are not affected each time.

#3. Decide on a Look

Once you have your cornrows in, apply mousse or a similar product all over your hair. Sit under the dryer until your style gets set. You can also wrap your cornrows so they can set. You should avoid products that will cause a buildup in your hair.

#4. Maintenance Routine

Just because you have cornrows doesn’t mean you don’t have to take care of your hair. It would be best to hydrate and wash it daily; it will look a little different than when your hair is not in cornrows.

You should use a clarifying shampoo to eliminate any product buildup in your hair. A moisturizing shampoo will help hydrate your hair, and you can finish up with a conditioner. Next, you should pat your hair dry and apply a leave-in conditioner that will help protect your hair.

#5. Nighttime

tips to avoid bad cornrows - wrap braids at night

Are you scared of ending up with a bad cornrow? Well, a great way to protect the look of your cornrows is by covering them with a scarf before bed. You can apply a hydrating product and wrap your hair with a silk scarf or something similar. Wrapping your cornrows will protect the edges and your roots.

A scarf will help prevent your hair from breaking as you lie on it. Your hair will look healthy and fresh.

#6. Avoid Friction

Your hair will grow even when you have cornrows. It is essential to avoid friction if you want to prevent a frizzy look, so you should be careful when putting on and removing hats. You could cause your cornrows to loosen if you are too rough, and they may look messy.

#7. Avoid Product Buildup

tips to avoid bad cornrows - moisturize braids

Many people use greasy products on their cornrows to keep them looking good, which is the worst thing you can do. Instead, you should moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize some more.

You can use a damp cloth to clean your cornrows every week, and this will prevent product buildup in your hair.

Water and light oils are best to moisturize your cornrows and scalp. You can use olive oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. Mix the oil with water and then press into your scalp and the cornrows. You should avoid rubbing the mixture into your hair because this will loosen your cornrows.

Do Bad Cornrows Damage Your Hair?

When cornrows are too tight, they can lead to hair loss. The damage is not immediate but will happen over time. You should monitor your scalp for redness, soreness, or bumps. These are possible signs that your cornrows are too tight. Cornrows that are too tight can also lead to traction alopecia.

Traction alopecia gets caused by repeated damage to the hair follicles. This type of alopecia is caused by repeatedly pulling on your hair. Cornrows that are too tight can result in this type of alopecia. You can reverse this condition by changing your hairstyle and avoiding those that pull on your hair.

You must maintain your cornrows as you would with any other hairstyle. Washing, conditioning, and moisturizing are all critical to the health of your hair.

What Should You Do if Your Cornrows Are Bad?

what to do if cornrows become bad

Considering the time and money you have invested in your cornrows, getting a bad hairstyle can be disheartening. It does happen, though, and you don’t want to gamble the health of your hair follicles, roots, and scalp for a temporary hairstyle.

When you feel discomfort from your cornrows, or you can tell that they are too tight, the wisest thing to do is remove them immediately.

Massage moisturizer or a de-tangling product into your cornrows; start from the ends, and work towards your scalp. Use your fingers to unravel and work out any tangles as you go.

Use a wide tooth comb and work each section of your hair. It is sometimes easier to separate your hair into sections and clip them. Gently comb through your hair to remove all the tangles. Once the cornrows are out, shampoo and condition your hair as you usually would.

Tips to avoid getting bad cornrows:

  • Hydrate your hair before getting cornrows.

16. Lemonade Braids

cornrow braids for black men with round face

Lemonade cornrow braids are ideal hairstyles for men with coarse hair who want a hairstyle that works in a professional environment but also shows their personal style. Go for a shorter temple and forehead hair and begin your braids from different points on the scalp, creating a beautiful pattern.

17. Crisscrossed Braids

Go for a medium fade that will beautifully complement your cornrow style for men. Opt for tiny braids that cross each and ultimately feed in the thicker braids you create at the edge of your fade.

If you like braiding styles, you definitely heard about these two popular braid types: Box Braids and Cornrows. While both of these braided hairstyles are excellent for protecting your natural hair and providing a low-maintenance option, there are differences between them.

In this article, you’ll discover the differences between box braids and cornrows so you can instantly recognize them. This will help you make the best choice if you want to opt for one of these.

Box Braids

Box braids are single braids that are only attached to your scalp at the root of the “box” they start and hang from. All the hair aree divided into squares, triangles, or rhombuses, which can be smaller or larger by choice, and from which each braid would start.

They are usually made together with synthetic hair added and can be as long and thick as you like. Of course, the colors are also by choice.

On regular box braids, a piece of synthetic hair would be wrapped around the root to grab all the hair from a box together and tighten the base, and then start the classic 3-strand braiding technique.

Knotless box braids would directly start with the braiding technique and the synthetic hair would be mixed with the natural one at the root or gradually fed in.

Box braids can be washed almost like your natural hair, styled in various ways, and last up to two months.

The cost of box braiding depends on the braids’ amount, size, length, hairstylist’s range, and geographical location, but an average price for box braids would be between 150$ and 300$.

Cornrows

cornrow braids
Cornrows

Cornrows are braids that are continuously attached to your scalp. They follow the path drawn on the scalp, and there are unlimited different patterns that you can try.

The paths can be wide or narrow, straight, curved, or angular, directed down, on a side, or up towards the top of the head, and so many other options. But once you opt for a pattern, you can’t style it very much in another way, as they are fixed on the scalp and unmovable.

It is also used and useful to use synthetic hair on cornrows, and they can be placed once at the start of the braid or gradually added, which is called feeding cornrows or feed-in braids, and look more natural. The length, color, and amount of extension hair are by choice.

Cornrows can be also washed, but you don’t have as much access as you have for box braids. They usually last no more than four weeks.

The number of braids mostly influences cornrows’ prices, but the hairstylist’s range, geographical location, and other factors can also influence it. The average price will be +/- 120$.

Similarities

similarities between box braids and cornrows

Both styles are very versatile in the options you can make, and they can look as glamorous or as tribal as you want. The smaller the braids are, the bigger the price and working time, and the more they can last.

Box braids can be also mixed with cornrows. The most common styles of mixed ones are Fulani braids type or mohawk box braids with sides cornrows.

Box braids and cornrows are amazing versatile styles, and you should try them if you like braids. Each experience differs, and you can opt for your unique combination of sizes, lengths, colors, and so on.

Have a great braids journey, and keep loving your hair!

FAQs

Box braids or cornrows: which one is better?

The best is the one that suits your necessities and preferences. If you want a quick and less expensive style and don’t need it to last very long, try some large cornrows.

If you want to keep it as much as possible and have the possibility to style it in different ways, pick up small box braids.

Do box braids damage my hair? What about cornrows?

Both styles can damage your hair if they are excessively tightened. Knotless box braids should be less harmful than box braids. There should be no pain when getting those styles in order to be safe.

Also, you need to clean and hydrate your scalp while wearing them, take breaks between one and another session, don’t keep them for too long, and carefully detangle your hair when unbraiding them.

Are cornrows and box braids the same?

No, cornrows and box braids are not the same. Cornrows are braids that are closely braided to the scalp in straight rows, while box braids are sectioned into square-shaped parts and braided into individual plaits that hang freely.

Cornrows braids are a lovely way to wear your hair. This hairstyle can be classic and simple or a real artwork.

No matter why you opted for cornrows, as soon as you did, I’m sure you won’t like it to get messy. Therefore, this article is about how to keep cornrows away from frizzing and make them look good.

Before we get right into the things you need to do, let’s see what could make this thing happen. So, the first questions would be:

Why Do Cornrows Frizz?

Causes of Frizzy Cornrows

The most frequent causes of frizziness are friction, dryness, environment (more humid than thirsty hair), hair condition, new growth, and wrong products.

  • Your hair’s natural texture and thickness can cause frizz in cornrows. Coarser hair textures may be more susceptible to frizz.
  • Tight or improperly done cornrow braids can create tension in your hair. This tension can lead to frizz and hair breakage over time.
  • Over-manipulating cornrows by touching, brushing, or styling them too frequently can result in frizzy cornrows.
  • Lack of moisture is one of the key reasons for frizzing cornrows. So, make sure your cornrow braids are moisturized properly. Using products that contain alcohol or other drying ingredients can strip moisture from the hair and cause frizzy hair.
  • Sleeping with your cornrows uncovered or rubbing your head against rough surfaces can also cause frizz and flyaways.
  • Neglecting to properly maintain your cornrows, such as not washing or moisturizing them regularly, can contribute to frizz and damage.
  • If you use too much hair products or don’t wash out the products properly, your cornrows will end up frizzy because of build-up on the scalp and hair.

How to Prevent Cornrows from Frizzing

The two most common reasons for frizzy cornrows are discussed in detail below:

#1. Protect Braids from Friction

Protect Cornrows from Friction to Prevent Frizz

The first thing you need to know and do starting with your first day (night) of wearing your braids is to wrap a silky scarf or a satin durag on your head before going to bed.

That way, you’ll protect your hair from friction as well as from getting dry and frizzy. Don’t forget to add moisture or water before putting on the durag as often as needed to keep your hair hydrated.

Furthermore, use your durag when getting dressed, for the same reason of protecting your cornrows from friction. Try to avoid rough textures touching your hair.

Nowadays, you can even find nice caps, hats, or all types of headgear with full-screened satin lined on the market.

Also, replace your towel with a soft microfiber one to safely dry your cornrows after washing them. Your hair will thank you, as it is better to use it in any circumstance.

If you have low porosity hair, heat can help you open your hair cuticles and absorb the products into your hair. So it would be helpful to do your cornrow maintenance routine, wrap a scarf around your head and use a warm blow-dryer to help products get inside.

On the other hand, if you have high porosity hair and your cuticles are wide open, heat would do no good, but what would help would be using cold water to close the cuticles and seal the moisture inside.

You may also need to use different products, according to your hair type, as low-porosity hair needs low-weight ingredients, high-PH products, humectants, few or no proteins, and clarifying shampoos as it is prone to build up.

Whereas high porosity hair needs much more proteins, low-PH products, and heavier ingredients like oils, butter, and cream-based leave-ins. Also, deep conditioning can be frequently co-washed and rinsed with an ACV mixture (water with apple cider vinegar).

If you have large strands of hair coming out of the braids, you can put them back inside your cornrows using a latch hook crochet or even cut them if you don’t mind.

Here are some more tips to prevent cornrows from frizzing:

  • Keep your hair moisturized by using a leave-in conditioner or hair oil.
  • Avoid over-manipulating your cornrows by touching or brushing them too frequently.
  • Use anti-frizz products such as serums, sprays, or gels.
  • Protect your cornrows from humidity by wearing a headscarf or hat (if needed).
  • Avoid using too much hair products. If you do use, make sure you wash out the products properly.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair gently.
  • Prevent friction and breakage for your cornrows. You can sleep with a silk or satin pillowcase if needed.
  • Don’t leave your cornrows in for more than six weeks to prevent frizz and damage to your hair.

How to Refresh Frizzy Cornrows

How to Refresh Frizzy Cornrows

If you need to do a touch-up on your braids to make them look neat again and calm down the frizz and messy hair, you’ll need to clean your scalp and hair and apply plenty of mousse on your cornrows in the same direction that has been braided.

Next, you can add some holding spray or gel, and after that, wrap a satin scarf or a durag around your head and let it sit there until your hair gets completely dry. That will make your messy hair stay flat and add some shine.

Also, lay your edges down on the forehead or back on the head, using a small brush like those used for mascara or teeth and an edge control product.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article and that it helped prevent your cornrows from getting frizzy. Keep loving your hair and your hairstyle!

FAQs

Is it good to clean my cornrows with dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo is not very efficient for any type of hair, but the most powerful for all hair types styled in cornrows would be a foaming shampoo. You can definitely use that for a quick clean of your braids and to get rid of itchiness.

How can I stop my cornrows from itching?

Clean your scalp and keep it moisturized. You can wash your hair in the shower or use a foaming shampoo. If your scalp isn’t dry, and you typically collect build-ups, you can also use apple cider vinegar mixed with water to deep clean your scalp.

If your cornrows are made together with synthetic hair added, which is treated with highly alkaline chemicals, ACV would also neutralize that. Tea tree oil can also help with itchy scalp problems.

How much can I keep my cornrows on?

Cornrows usually last between 1 and 6 weeks, depending on the braids size, hair type, and caring. Try not to keep them for more than six weeks.

How Much Do Cornrows Cost?

Prices for cornrows mostly vary depending on the number of braids. There are hundreds of cornrows styles, and prices vary anywhere between $30 and $300.

There are other factors that influence the price (geographical location, braidist’s range, extensions used, pattern’s complexity, length of hair, etc.) but the main criteria, in general, is the braids amount (or time).

In general, fewer braids mean less time, less money, and they also last less. In opposition, many tiny cornrows would cost the most, and they’re also the most durable.

According to that, the most inexpensive braids would be one-side braids (2-4 small cornrows only on one side), two jumbo braids, one halo, top braids, or similar, generally valued between $30 and $75, cheaper without extensions added.

types of cornrows
Top Braids, Two Jumbo Braids, Top Men Special Design (g-Clef), and Side Cornrows (Photos from Archive ©Ina Shan ©HairstyleCamp)

The next ones would be classical, no-extensions jumbo cornrows between 3 and 6 rows. They are worth somewhere between $50 and $80.

Consider that some braidists or salons have smaller rates for children and some even for men. On the other hand, there are somewhere prices that start at $75.

Moving on, we’ll have those jumbo cornrows with extensions, the same as mentioned before but with synthetic hair added, valued between $60 and $100, same as more classical no-extensions cornrows, let’s say up to 10.

Different Cornrows

We keep going like this and increase the number of braids, we already added the extensions, and we hit the level of 6-12 braids, which would cost between $80 and 150$. Here we can include large lemonade, VIP ponytail (updo), and others.

Assuming that you already understood the algorithm, we make it to the 10+ cornrows, which would cost $100+ and can get up to $300 or even more.

Cost of Cornrow Braids

Usually, cornrows’ costs are indicative, as they must be discussed according to the chosen pattern, length, whether you want extensions added or not, and other preferences.

So the prices could be like “$85 and up” for up to 7 braids. Other salons have prices listed for each number of cornrows, and the rate increases together with the number of braids.

In this case, they always stop somewhere and have an approximate price for the last one. There are also some that have prices for specific patterns, and some that have no prices listed at all, just services and the option to call for prices.

You can think of cornrows’ prices as tattoo prices. The size is like the number of braids and length, the complexity of the model chosen – it costs less for letters or tribals than for portraits – same for cornrows, and the shades would be.. the extensions.

Which Are the Most Expensive Cornrows?

fulani cornrows
Fulani-style Cornrows (©Ina Shan ©HairstyleCamp)

The most expensive cornrows are usually those mixed with single braids (box braids/twist), like Fulanis style, for example. These kinds of cornrows would rather be scored as box braids.

Small Lemonade, small Updos, two or three layers braids, and other small or micro cornrows styles would also cost over $150.

Since there are so many types of cornrows, they are almost impossible to be precisely categorized. Also, values such as “small”, “medium”, and “large” can be differently estimated from braider to braider.

The best option would be to refer to images, but don’t forget that hair types and head shapes are unique and all designs must be adapted to each individual.

FAQs

Can any hair type get cornrows?

Yes, but for the Caucasian type, it needs to be at least 8cm long. Some salons/braiders could also charge extra for non-afro hair types.

Do I need extensions for cornrows?

It is optional, but they help, even if you choose a feed-in style with the same color as your natural hair, it will make the braids look better and last longer.

Many times I heard people asking for their cornrows to last as long as possible, but the only thing I can do is recommend they choose a narrowed pattern and maintain the cornrows properly.

Even so, cornrows aren’t made to last for too long, as they are unmovable and continuously attached to the scalp, so there is not much access for washing like there is for single braids.

Still, they need to be cleaned if you want to keep them for more than a week. And your scalp needs to be washed and moisturized if you don’t want to die scratching yourself and have your cornrows full of flecks.

How to Wash Your Cornrows

How to Wash Your Cornrows

Get into the shower, turn the water on and wet them all over. The shampoo (preferably a sulfate-free, organic one) can be diluted with water, but it isn’t mandatory.

It makes it easier to distribute it and rinse it off. You can mix it in your palms but if it is possible, use an applicator with a nozzle to mix and distribute it on your scalp, between the lines of your cornrows.

Apply the shampoo everywhere between the lines of your cornrows and gently massage your scalp and the length of your braids with the pads of your fingertips. Don’t rub it too vigorously so it wouldn’t frizz.

The moves should be in the direction that has been braided and from the headline toward the neck, not backward (except when there is an updo pattern).

Go back under the shower and rinse off the shampoo, then apply again and repeat the process.

Now the second time you rinse off the shampoo, make sure you get everything out and there is no shampoo left.

Optional, for textured or dry hair only, use a conditioner. Gently apply it on your scalp and let it there for +/- 10 minutes. Rinse it out with plenty of warm water.

Use a soft microfiber or a soft cotton towel to pat, squeeze and dry your braids.

After washing your hair it is recommended to use a leave-in conditioner or oils that help your scalp stay hydrated and moisturized.

How to Clean Your Cornrows without Washing Them

If you want to clean your cornrows but not get under the shower, you can use a braid care kit or a dry shampoo and conditioner/light oils.

However, if it is still itchy after, you may need a deeper cleanse.

How to Prevent Dandruff and Itchiness in Cornrows?

Keep your scalp moisturized and hydrated. Use a moisturizing spray or light oils suitable for your hair type and clean your scalp and your cornrows as often as you need.

How to Prevent and Fix Frizzy and Messy Braids?

How to prevent and fix frizzy and messy cornrow braids

In order to prevent frizz and messy cornrows, you need to reduce friction as much as possible.

The best investment you can make is to get satin or silk bedding. You can also wrap a satin scarf or a satin bonnet on your head when going to sleep if you can’t or don’t want to use silky sheets, but those are also good for your unbraided hair, as it prevents breakages, thrill and tangling. It also helps you prevent the apparition of wrinkles.

Try not to wear tight shirts like turtlenecks, as well as rough fabrics like wool, especially if it is on your head (like caps and hats), but even just the touch might be damaging.

Don’t scratch your head, wash it.

If you want to use a hair dryer, wrap a satin scarf over your head after moisturizing and only use it after, with the scarf on, so the hairs will lay down and stay flat.

You can also use this method to lay down your frizzy and baby hair after each moisturizing session. Another way to calm down your frizz is to use a mousse and wrap a satin scarf on your hair after.

Use a brush (mascara or toothbrush would work) for arranging your headline baby hairs back on the head or draw nice curves on your forehead.

How to Prevent Hair from Breakage and Harm When Getting Cornrows?

How to prevent hair from breakage and harm with cornrows
BTS, Photographer-Luca Roxana Emilia, Model-Oana Rus

First of all, you should avoid any painful hairdos. If your hair hurts when braided and even after, it isn’t normal. You don’t need lifting surgery when getting cornrows, and your hair is not a surgical thread.

Don’t ever take a painkiller pill if a braider recommends you to use it so you won’t feel the pain anymore because such a hairstyle is dangerous for your hair, it can cause sores, hair loss, and even traction alopecia.

Tell the braider if it hurts you and ask to make it less tight. If they can’t, just go away. If you don’t do this, you’ll have to unbraid it urgently after it’s done.

Don’t look back after the money and the time you lost, the hair you’re going to lose if you wait until the pain goes away will probably not come back.

Moisturize, nourish, clean and hydrate your scalp when braided.

Take breaks between one and another braiding session and don’t keep them for too long.

And the last, but not the least important thing, be very patient with the removal process. Take off your braids carefully and detangle your hair with a lot of patience and use conditioning products if you need them.

If you don’t use them when you unbraid your hair, you need to use them anyway before shampooing it. Wash your hair very gently the first time after having your hair braided.

And in the end, don’t forget to love your hair!

FAQs on Cornrow Maintenance

How long do cornrow braids last?

Depending on your hair type, pattern choice, and the way you take care of them, between 2 and 6 weeks.

How can I keep cornrows clean?

Wash them and use leave-in cleaning products as often as you need, normally one time per week you would need a deep cleaning process.

Can I shower with cornrows?

Yes, you can shower with cornrows and even wash them with shampoo and plenty of water.

How should I sleep with cornrows?

Wrap a satin scarf/bonnet on your head or use silky bedding. You can also moisturize your scalp before going to sleep. Bonnets or scarves help you get the most of the products used into your hair and scalp because they would not evaporate and they also help your hair stay flat.

Cornrows are something very general. You can braid four braids on the scalp and get cornrows, or you can braid twenty braids on the scalp, and, guess what? You got cornrows.

But the question is, how long can you expect cornrows to last?

As a professional braider, I’ll answer some common questions regarding cornrows I often get from the clients.

How Long Do Cornrows Last?

Cornrows last between 1 and 8 weeks, depending on hair type, cornrows pattern (more or fewer braids), products used, and caring.

These inflexible braids stuck on the head are still made of natural hair (with or without hair extensions), which is growing, needs to be washed, and more or less wants to get out of braids when getting in touch with different things, and it even can make babies.

By the way, I love those cute baby hairs on the forehead. Happily or sadly, they come out from every part of the scapula.

Why Do Cornrows Get Messy?

All hair types get frizzy and messy in cornrows after more or less time.

Everybody sleeps, gets dressed, touches their head with different things, and hair is alive as I mentioned before.

Afro hair goes away from the scalp more slowly, being so curly it seems to grow less.

Also, its texture is harder, and it slides less. For these reasons, this type of hair, which loves these braids so much, can enjoy cornrows for a longer time than straight/Caucasian hair.

Those must be really happy if their cornrows still look neat after three weeks, while afro-haired people can easily maintain their aspect for more than one month.

If the hair is short and the braid size is large (only got few braids on the scalp), the natural hair can easily get out of the braid. Not all of it, but it can get messy quickly. Even when your hair is long enough, thicker braids get messy more quickly than tiny ones.

Also, the endings of hairs can come out from any part of the braid after some friction and moves.

Cleaning the head unproperly, scratching it, wearing tight and/or rough fabrics on the scalp, sleeping on harsh sheets, moving a lot while sleeping, putting in and out accessories through the braids, letting the cat play with braids, wearing glasses uncarefully, doing headstands, dancing in the rain, and many other things can affect the beautiful cornrows.

Can You Make Your Cornrows Last Longer?

Yes, I can, if I want. But I’m not sure about you! (joking).

Taking care of your hairdo and avoiding everything I mentioned above can help your cornrows last longer.

It also matters the way that your cornrows have been braided.

If you want to keep your cornrows for a while, choose a pattern with multiple narrowed braids instead of one with thick and fewer braids. Also, working time and price would rise together with their durability, so extremely slim cornrows wouldn’t help you very much, because it would be better for you to have two times the medium size of cornrows.

If you only do one side of your hair and sleep on the other side, you’ll see that you can keep your cornrows longer than usual, and maintaining them for up to one month isn’t difficult, but you still need to wash your hair carefully.

The hairstylist must be experienced and braid your cornrows very close to the scalp, but it must not be painful so it wouldn’t affect the health of your natural hair. It is also better if they use special wax for braiding.

Choose to use synthetic hair even if you want a natural look, so you can have the same color of extensions as your natural hair because it makes them last longer and looks better.

How to Make Cornrow Braids Last Longer?

  1. Sleep on silky sheets (silk/satin or any glossy and soft fabric) or use a satin bonnet/scarf.
  2. Choose a pattern with narrow braids and mix hair with extension. Also to be used a special wax when braiding.
  3. Wash your head with organic shampoo (that can be diluted with water) in a delicate way, and rinse with water with little pressure when necessary. If you don’t clean it, itchiness and dirt may appear. You can only spray water or dry shampoo if you think washing isn’t mandatory.
  4. Don’t wear rough fabrics (only rough pants/skirt if you want).
  5. Don’t scratch your head.
  6. If you wear glasses, don’t put the frame of the glasses through the braid, place it over the braid carefully.
  7. Use products to calm down your frizzy hair; it can be hair polish, hair spray, moose, oils, moisturizing products, hair glue, or whatever works with your type of hair. You can also style your baby hairs on the forehead with hair glue.
  8. Cut the strands of hair coming out of the braids or use a special crochet hook to put them back inside the braid.
  9. If your hair is Caucasian type, don’t cut your ends recently before braiding your hair. Fresh endings tend to get out of the braid.

Taking care of your cornrows makes them last as much as your hair can handle. There are exceptional cases of Caucasians who maintained their cornrows looking neat after four weeks and afro-haired, who kept them nicely for two months.

If you love these hairstyles, as I do, there are millions of patterns and styles that you can experience!
Have fun, and keep loving your hair!

Since everyone is obsessed with braids, we wanted to inspire you with a selection of cornrow ponytail styles. The 30 amazing creations below are truly a work of art. It doesn’t matter if you are African-American or not, these manes will cause you serious hair envy. If you find a very good braider, don’t hesitate to copy at least one.

How to Put Cornrow Hair Into Ponytail

cornrow ponytail styles

To braid cornrows you will have to decide which size you want them, and the pattern. Beginners can start with the basic parallel style. The real cornrow braids are small, which means you will need to separate the hair in very small sections.

Start from the front. Create several rows with a comb and secure them with a clip. Grab the first one and divide it into three strands in the front and clip the rest of it. All of these braids should reach the spot where the ponytail will be located.

Get the left strand, put it under the middle one and over to the right side. You can now take the right strand and put it under the middle one and over to the left side. This is how you create the basis of the cornrow. You can continue with the same technique, the only difference is that you need to start adding more hair from the back.

Use the rest of the hair in the row, and add a small strand to the middle section. Make sure that you have enough hair so that you can put it in a ponytail. If not, you can always use extensions. For the back and sides, you are the one who decides which pattern you’ll opt for. Tie the cornrows in a pony.

How to Do Cornrow Ponytail with Weave

cornrow ponytail styles with weave

Weaves will not stop you from getting this type of ponytail. Professional braiders know exactly how to use the weave to get the style that you like. Once the weave is on, it will be very simple.

Place your hands on the roots of the weave. You should be as gentle as possible with it, in order not to pull it off. Decide where you want to get the cornrow and separate that section. Use a small part in the front, separate three strands. Place the left piece under the middle and over to the right. Take the right section, place it under the middle and over to the left side.

During the next step, you can start adding hair from the section to the middle strand. You can continue doing this until you’re done with the whole section. Use the cornrow braiding technique to the spot where the ponytail will be, from there on continue braiding in the classic technique. Use a tie to put the braids in a pony.

Cornrow braids have been a popular hairstyle for years, and with feed in braids, you’re literally feeding your hair with more hair through extensions.

This hairstyle is always in, and it’s great for both kids and adults, especially when you want to keep your hair out of your face. Feed-in braids can be done to fit any hairstyle of your choosing.

Read on to see the different braid hairstyles you’ll fall in love with.

Why Feed In Braids?

The feed in braids gets their name from the style itself. Because you are actually feeding in your head with more hair because the hair length you already have ( or don’t have at all) is not enough to complete the whole cornrow braids you want to end up with.

Moreover, they make a great hair styling plan for summertime because they can keep your hair away from your sweaty face while maintaining its length.

In addition to that, they are low maintenance so you don’t need to worry about styling your hair for another two to three months! And let’s not forget that this design is age free, so it looks good for both kids and adults.

Plus, it is a protective hairstyle so it gives you the chance to grow out your hair without having to go through the ugly mid-length phase. You can browse our favorite cornrow braids here.

How To Feed In Braids (For Beginners)

With every new style at hand comes the first time you go through it. And since first-timers get lost and confused here is a detailed step by step procedure to guide you throughout the whole braiding process. So, let us start off with the things you need for it.

Tools And Items Required:

  1. Three to four pegs of Kane-kalon braiding hair extensions.
  2. Hair wax
  3. Hairspray.
  4. Hair clips.
  5. Scissors.
  6. Boiled water.
  7. Elastic Bands

Now that you have everything you need, let us start with the hairstyling!

Difference Between Senegalese Twists and Box Braids

 Step-By-Step Procedure:

  1. Wash your hair.
  2. Brush your hair until it is tangle-free.
  3. Blow-dry your hair for more volume.
  4. Section your hair into several sections ( in this tutorial we will go with 4 sections but you can go with the number you want) using the edge of a hair comb.  Tip: Make sure the subsections are divided equally and neatly. Otherwise, the design will look sloppy and unprofessional.
  5. Flat iron your hair if you have thick and kinky hair.
  6. Mark the edge of each section with a really thin braid.
  7. Apply some wax to the roots of the hair if you have got a soft hair to give it more hold, a nice glossy shine, and keep it from flying out.
  8. Braid just like shown in the youtube tutorial video linked below.
  9. Make sure you always add more hair to even the thickness as you are braiding.
  10. Spritz every once in a while or apply some edge wax to blend in the faux hair with the natural hair.
  11. Avoid using gel because it is too wet and slippery. In addition to that, when gel dries it can be flakey. However, if you want an edgy look with harder edges gel will be exactly what you need.
  12. Make sure to trim out your nails before starting the braiding process because it can be impossible to go through that kind of braids with tall nails.
  13. The key to perfection in this hairstyle is to wrap the hair as tightly as you can. That way, it will last a longer life span.
  14. Go over the braids with a flat iron in order to get the tiny flyouts out of the way.
  15. Even out the tips of the braids with a brush.
  16. Dip the tips in boiled water.
  17. Cut them off because you do not need them anymore.
  18. Secure the ends with elastic bands.
  19. Adorn your braids with some hair clips or accessories to make it stand out even more.

14. Varying Sizes

When out of ideas for shining as the star of the event, you can try out this scaling technique. It all relies on varying the sizes of your braids and arranging them in an order you can freestyle or copy online.

Tip:  Go with a dramatic arrangement that goes directly from extremely thick to really thin braids. This way guarantees you to make the first impression as a daring and bold lady who is not afraid to try out something new.

15. In Whatever Direction

On the contrary to other designs, feed in braids are considered flexible and eclectic. Because unlike other hairstyles, they do not possess one silhouette.

They can be done across, at the back of your head, from the tips of your forehead, or just in whatever angle and whatever direction you desire. So, it offers us a variety of styles and a whole lot of space to show off our creative skills.

16. Shorter Feed In Braids

As for girls who want to pull off short braids, you can tether those feed in braids into whatever length you need.

Some of us girls would do just ANYTHING to get noticed. Well, here is a simple way that will guarantee that you can never set foot in a room without being the center of attention. So, all you have to do is go with braids that are bigger than the normal scale.

18. Double Trouble

Combining braids of different thicknesses is a step up towards the hall of fame in the hairstyle world. Because it definitely gives you that wow factor and makes you stand out in the crowd. However, this is not every surprising factor this design to offer.

Because it goes way beyond just braiding and goes through double the trouble ( totally worth it though!) and twists the ends of the braids to form two cutesy buns.

Tip: This design works best for little girls or as a sporty hairstyle for girls with older age.

19. Long Bridal Braids

As for the bride who wishes for a hairstyle that is ” out of this world “, here is something that you will definitely fall in love with. So, we present to you the Ombre effect. For those who are not familiar with the general concept of ombre designs: it’s the gradual blending of color from one shade to another.

So, as an exotic idea for your feed in wedding braids, you can pick out your favorite color (purple is chosen in the example above) and use the ombre effect as a flashy focal point of your pure white outfit.

That way you would be able to add some color to your wedding look without actually breaking the sacred law of the white dress bridal code.

20. Creative Contrast

While a lot of you may not believe that simple touches can have the biggest effects on a design, the contrast in the example above takes these feed in braids to a whole new level of brilliance. You can try two feed in braids instead of many as shown in the above photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to questions that are frequently asked about feed in braids:

Is there any difference between feed in braids and regular cornrows?

The difference comes from how your hair is braided. With regular cornrows, hair extensions are added at the beginning by your scalp and get braided to the tip of your hair.

Feed in braids are different because hair extension pieces are counted multiple times throughout the same braid.

How much will it cost to get feed in braids?

Based on how many braids you want and how many extensions are needed for your hairstyle, that’s the defining factor of how much feed in braids will cost

The average price range goes from $50 for 2 feed-ins to $120-$150 for 10 feed in braids. Depending on your hair texture and the volume of braids you desire, there might be a slight price change.

How long can feed in braids last?

On average, feed-in braids can last up to 2 weeks before needing touch-ups.

Can I wash feed in braids?

Yes. However, don’t drench your feed in braids with water when washing. The proper way to wash your feed-ins is by using a damp washcloth with water and shampoo.

You must wash your scalp carefully by rubbing the washcloth between each braid to avoid having them come undone. Once washed, rinse your braids with a plain washcloth damped in water.

Are feed in braids a protective hairstyle?

Yes. Feed-ins protect your natural hair by adding extensions to give the braids more volume.

However, you must remember that feed in braids are a protective hairstyle when the braids aren’t too tight and do not pull your scalp.

Can I swim with feed in braids?

Swimming in chlorinated pools or salt water is rough for any hair type. However, if your hair is braided, you’re enclosing your natural hair from the chemicals in the water.

Braiding your hair before swimming also makes your hair less knotted when you come out. Having a variety of oils and conditioners that are suitable for your hair gives short-term protection when you swim.

Do feed in braids help hair grow?

Feed in braids can help your hair grow because they protect your hair from friction. The friction of brushing your hair can break the ends and give a frizzy and brittle look to your hair.

You give your hair time to relax and grow with feed-in braids since there is no need for daily styling.

Are feed in braids good for hair and scalp?

If you have coarse-textured hair, the feed-in extensions for the braids will have a better grip on your scalp. However, if your braids are too tight and your hair is a more fine texture, it could lead to unnecessary breakage and pain in your scalp.

The process of feeding your hair with extensions can lead to tension if you have a more sensitive scalp. The neatness of the braids comes from the tightness and the added extensions, so it’s essential to keep in mind your scalp’s sensitivity before continuing with feed-in braids.

Feed in braids looks great as part of a longer hairstyle. You can choose from a wide range of different extensions, with different thicknesses. This will allow you to choose a braided style which completely expresses how fabulous you really are.

Finally, you can’t go wrong with feed in braids. They’re one of the most trendy and popular hairstyles for summer 2024. So grab your brushes and elastic bands and start braiding!
