If you’re a blonde, you can choose any color you like. However, if you have dyed your red and now you want to get rid of it, you probably need to know how to remove red hair dye from blonde hair.

Luckily, red is a fickle color that takes time to stick; so if it’s your first attempt, it shouldn’t take much effort to pull out those red pigments.

But once the red dye sets in, you may need to work a little harder to get back to your beautiful blonde hair.

If you are a natural blonde and struggling to remove red hair color after dying your hair, read this article till the end

How Long Does Red Dye Take to Wash Out of Blonde Hair?

how to washout red hair dye from blonde hair

Red hair is one of the most high-maintenance colors, requiring extensive upkeep and re-dying to keep the color in your hair. Even blondes who can take any other hue will notice fading within four weeks or so.

But it may not wash out completely. You might need to get those red pigments out of your hair to get your blonde hair back.

The duration for red dye to wash out of blonde hair can vary depending on several factors.

On average, if it’s a semi-permanent red dye, you can expect the color to start fading from your blonde hair within 4-8 washes. You can easily remove semi-permanent red dye from hair without bleach.

However, for permanent dyes, the red tint may even require professional color correction for complete removal.

If your blonde hair is very light or platinum, the red dye might take hold more strongly and could take longer to fade.

Tips to Remove Red Hair Dye from Blonde Hair?

If you’ve ever dyed your hair before, you probably have a good idea about how long your blonde hair holds color, even if it fades substantially.

Though it’s not common for blondes, some still struggle with keeping dye in their hair. Those blondes with a history of frequent touch-ups might not take much effort to strip the red.

However, if you have a history of stubborn dye jobs, DIY methods might not work for you, so you might need to bleach your hair or professional treatments to remove the dye.

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

baking soda and lemon juice to remove red hair dye from blonde hair

One of the best ways to remove red hair dye from blonde hair is baking soda and lemon juice. You can even remove permanent red dye with baking soda.

  1. Mix lemon juice and baking soda in a 1:1 ratio.
  2. Apply the mixture to your hair.
  3. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Rinse the mixture out of your hair.

Make sure you condition your hair after using this mixture because it can be harsh. It will take several washes to strip the pigments, and you could damage your hair in the process.

Dish Soap

Another DIY hair dye removal method for blondes is dish soap. Dish soap can strip buildup and hair dye blonde hair. The process is also very simple.

Here are the steps to remove red dye from blonde hair using dish soap.

  1. Wet your hair.
  2. Cover your entire head with dish soap, so it turns into a lather.
  3. Use dish soap to wash your hair every day until the red dye comes out.

It’s also what they use to remove oil and grease from dishes, so expect it to feel harsh on your hair. So conditioning your hair is a must after using this method.

Use a Color-Removing Product

Before you move on to the last resort, you could try a color removal product. It’s gentler than bleach and probably a better option than the above DIY methods.

Color remover removes hair color that is darker than your natural hair color. Also, many brands produce conditioning color removers that are less damaging to hair.

Be sure to follow the instructions on the box, especially the amount of time you leave the product on your hair.

Also, make sure you are careful with application and cover all hair thoroughly to avoid streaking. You don’t want to end up with red patches all over your blonde head!

Commercial color removers don’t affect your base color, so you should end up blonde again. However, you might have to bleach your hair if color remover fails to remove red dye from your blonde hair.

Bleach

using bleach to remove red hair dye from blonde hair

Even natural blondes can use bleach. If you’re dealing with stubborn red dye, it might be your only option to restore that gorgeous blonde color.

  1. Mix developer with 1 part bleach.
  2. Saturate your hair with the mixture.
  3. Let the bleach and developer mixture sit for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Rinse your hair.
  5. Use a clarifying or moisturizing shampoo.
  6. Do a deep-conditioning treatment or leave-in conditioner on your hair.

Do not attempt bleaching hair immediately after trying any of the above methods. Your hair needs time to recover and bleaching it after using other stripping methods can severely damage your blonde hair.

Wrap Up

Removing red hair dye from blonde hair isn’t much different from other colors, but it means knowing your hair color, texture, and porosity.

When in doubt, start with the gentlest options and work your way up, being cautious to condition your hair between attempts. Or, play it safe and head to the salon for a professional to fix you up.

If you’re a redhead, maintaining your hair can be a bit challenging at times. There’s plenty of advice floating around about how to maintain that gorgeous hue, including purple shampoo.

But what does purple shampoo do to your red hair? Many people claims purple shampoo made their red hair vibrant while others say it is not for redheads.

Don’t worry, we can explain everything you need to know to decide if purple shampoo is the right choice for your red hair.

Is It Safe to Use Purple Shampoo on Red Hair?

It’s perfectly safe to use purple shampoo on both natural and dyed red hair. In fact, purple shampoo can be beneficial for dyed red hair by counteracting unwanted orange or brassiness. However, it’s essential to use purple shampoo moderately, as excessive use can lead to dry hair.

While moderately using purple shampoo on colored red hair won’t harm your hair, it won’t have much effect on your natural hair color. So purple shampoo is an unnecessary product for natural redheads.

What Does Purple Shampoo Do to Red Hair?

purple shampoo on dyed red hair

As noted above, purple shampoo doesn’t benefit a natural redhead.

But there are two exceptions. First, if you happen to be a redhead with a lot of blonde or orangish highlights. The purple shampoo could offset those highlights and enhance the redness.

The other exception is if you dye your hair. Even then, it depends on what color you dye your red tresses because purple shampoo neutralizes yellow or brassy tones.

When you use purple shampoo on dyed red hair, several things can happen.

For lighter red shades, like strawberry blonde or copper, purple shampoo can help maintain the vibrancy and depth of the red color by removing the yellow and orange brassy tone.

On darker red shades, such as burgundy or auburn, purple shampoo may add a slight pink or magenta tint, slightly altering the hue.

When Should You Use Purple Shampoo on Your Red Hair?

The best time to use purple shampoo on red hair is when you notice the presence of yellow or orange tones creeping in. It’s usually an issue when the red starts to fade and the underlying natural tones shine through.

Using purple shampoo at this stage can help restore the vibrancy of your red color and keep it looking fresh for longer.

Since purple shampoo doesn’t do much for a natural redhead, it might be better to consider a different option that could enhance those gorgeous tones. Try these three alternative shampoo options:

  • Pink Shampoo: In the color wheel, pink is adjacent to red. So, the pink tint can blend well with your red hair.
  • Clear Shampoo: The non-tinted shampoo is ideal for all types of red hair
  • Red Shampoo: The red shampoo accentuates the red color in your hair, making your hair look vibrant. It’s the ideal shampoo for your hair and will protect your hair from UV.

Tips for Safely Using Purple Shampoo on Dyed-Red Hair

Here are some tips for using purple shampoo on dye red hair:

  1. Patch Test First: Before applying it to your entire head, do a strand test. Apply the purple shampoo to a small, inconspicuous section of hair and wait for the recommended amount of time. Rinse and observe any changes to ensure it doesn’t adversely affect your hair color.
  2. Use Sparingly: Purple shampoo is potent, so use it sparingly. Start by using it once a week or less frequently, depending on how your hair responds.
  3. Short Application Time: Leave the shampoo in your hair for only a short time, usually between 2 to 5 minutes. Leaving it on for too long can cause purple tints in your hair.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: After the allotted time, rinse your hair thoroughly to ensure all shampoo is washed out. This prevents any purple pigment from lingering in your hair.
  5. Follow with Conditioner: Use a good quality conditioner after rinsing out the shampoo. This helps to hydrate your hair and maintain its health, as toning shampoos can be drying.
  6. Monitor Hair Condition: Pay attention to how your hair reacts after using purple shampoo. If you notice dryness or brittleness, reduce the frequency of use and consider using a more nourishing shampoo in between.

So, What Happens If You Use Purple Shampoo on Red Hair?

Purple shampoo doesn’t do much for natural red hair but it can help people who dye their hair red. The shampoo can reduce brassiness and enhance vibrancy in your dyed red hair. Additionally, it can reduce the yellowish and orangish tints as your red hair color fades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the frequently asked questions about purple shampoo and red hair.

Does purple shampoo lighten or darken red hair?

The purple shampoo will neither lighten or darken your red hair. As a color shampoo and a toner, it’ll give your dyed red hair a more vibrant appearance.

How often should I use purple shampoo on red hair?

The desire to wash your red hair daily with purple shampoo can be tempting. But you should wash it twice or less per week.

How long should I leave the purple shampoo on red hair?

Purple shampoo doesn’t work like a dye. Let the shampoo sit on the head for a maximum of 5 minutes.

Redheads are an interesting rarity; only 1-2% of natural redheads are in the world’s population. Because of this, there’s often mystery surrounding what happens to red hair with age, including whether it will turn gray or white.

People often joke about all redheads being related to each other or being descendants of Leprechauns or other fantastical fairy-tale creatures.

But we’re here to move beyond the fairy tales. Read this article to learn whether red hair turns gray or white with age.

Do Redheads Go Gray or White with Age?

Do Redheads Go Grey or White?

Redheads don’t go gray; they usually go white or blonde.

Because red or ginger hair is so light anyway and requires less melanin to maintain, it’s easier to keep the color longer than darker hair types.

The pigment loss results in a gradual transition to white, so most redheads tend to skip on hair going gray and, instead, find their red hair becoming blonder or slowly turning white.

Red Hair Genetics

Genetics has an impact on what hair type you’ll end up with. Whether your hair is curly, kinky, straight, red, blonde, or black, it all boils down to genetics and the distinct combinations that result in those unique traits.

Redheads require a specific combination that is quite rare; you’ll often hear it’s rare for someone with red hair to have blue eyes, and that’s because of the genetic codes.

If your parents have red hair, it’s likely that you, too, will have red hair. However, sometimes you never really know.

Red hair is created by the combination of low amounts of eumelanin and higher amounts of pheomelanin, which are pigment types in your melanin.

Melanin is a pigment that defines our skin, eye, and hair colors; the concentration of melanin determines whether our skin, eyes, and hair are darker or lighter. The heavier the concentration of melanin, the darker our skin, hair, and eye color.

Eumelanin in high amounts creates dark or black hair. The less eumelanin you have, the lighter your hair will be. If you pair this with a higher amount of pheomelanin, a red/yellowish pigment, then, you’ll have that signature redhead hair.

Redheads also tend to have more freckles than others because of the lower melanin content.

How Does Red Hair Color Change with Age?

Aging Process and Red Hair Color

As we age, we notice differences in our hair. It thins out, falls out, and the color gradually fades or starts to turn gray. Some people find gray hairs earlier than others.

All hair colors may experience either graying hair or whitening hair as they get older. Due to their vibrant hair color, redheads might worry about what will happen to those tresses as they age.

Redheads may experience achromotrichia. This phenomenon happens with pigment loss or the absence of pigment in the hair.

Hair pigments create the color, and when they disappear, the hair color gradually fades into either gray or white, depending on the original pigment color.

This fading process often leads to a spectrum of changes. Red hair may first turn to a lighter, washed-out copper or rosy blonde before it begins to go white.

Unlike other hair colors where the gray is more immediately noticeable, the transition in redheads can be more subtle and gradual.

Does Red Hair Turn Gray Faster?

This is actually a misconception. Contrary to popular belief, red hair does not turn gray faster.

In reality, redheads usually experience graying later than other hair colors, and in many cases, their hair might not be visibly gray at all.

This is because the rate of graying is influenced by melanin production, and redheads typically have less melanin in their hair.

People with darker hair, who have more melanin, tend to notice graying earlier. Therefore, red hair often maintains its natural color longer compared to darker hair shades.

Can You Delay Hair Turning White as A Redhead?

Yes. If you find your red hair turning white or losing color prematurely, you can delay it by adjusting your diet and using different products to help hold onto that hair color.

While people may make jokes about stress causing their gray hair, it’s true! Stress can cause your hair to gray, along with other bothersome and health-threatening symptoms.

Delaying Going White as A Redhead

If you find your body exhibiting other characteristics that stem from stress (weight loss or gain, trouble sleeping, anxiety), you may consider meditating, exercising, or seeing a therapist.

If you can determine that stress is the cause of your whitening hair, doing appropriate meditative exercises and overall managing your stress in healthy, productive ways can reverse the graying.

These are worthwhile tips, regardless of your hair color. Redhead or not, reducing stress and maintaining a regular exercise regimen provides more benefits for your body than reversing your graying or white hair.

Summary

Redheads usually don’t go gray but turn white or blonde with age, due to their lower melanin content.

Their hair color changes more subtly, often becoming lighter before turning white, contrasting with darker hair types that gray more noticeably.

Genetics plays a significant role in this process. The unique combination of low eumelanin and high pheomelanin contributes to the red hair color and its aging pattern.

Contrary to popular belief, red hair does not turn gray faster than other hair colors; in fact, it often retains its natural color longer.

Are you tired of the never-ending maintenance that red hair requires or just in the mood for a new look?

Whatever the case, when the time comes to choose a new hair color to cover red, which hair color is the best to dye over red hair?

We’re here to tell you which hair color will be your best friend when covering red hair dye, how to choose the best color for your red hair, and how to effectively apply that color over red hair.

Which Hair Color Is Best For Dyeing Over Red Hair?

Brown hair color is the top choice for covering red hair. It’s best to put brown hair color over red hair for a couple of reasons.

What Colors Can I Put Over Red Hair?

If you’re looking to change your red hair, the color options largely depend on your current shade. Here are some general guidelines:

Brown: Pretty much any shade of brown works well on red hair. For light-red hair, go with light brown; for darker red, a darker brown works well. If you want to downplay the red tones, opt for a neutral or ash brown.

Black: This is a solid option if you’re looking to go darker and get rid of the red tones completely. Remember that your hair will not turn brunette but will become a true black that may fade to burgundy over time.

Light Blonde: If you have light-red hair, bleaching and toning can lead to a unique strawberry blonde color.

So, if you’re wondering what colors to put over red hair, brown is the most versatile, black is best for a dramatic change, and light blonde works if you’re starting with a light-red base and are okay with a strawberry blonde outcome.

Why Brown Is The Best Color to Dye Over Red Hair

The number one reason is that brown hair color is dark enough to cover up red hair dye. Red hair dye is very pigmented; therefore, you’ll need something with a lot of dark pigment to combat the red and keep it from showing through the new hair color. Brown is perfect for this.

There are several shades of brown, from the lightest brown to the darkest brown, so no matter what shade of red dye you’re trying to cover up, there’s a brown hair color that’s dark enough to cover up what you’re working with.

best hair color to dye over red

The second reason brown works so well to cover up red hair is the wide variety of tones brown hair color comes in.

If you want to completely neutralize the warm tones your red hair dye can leave behind, you can choose a brown with cool tones.

If you still want to keep some warmth in your hair, you can choose a brown with warm or neutral tones.

Brown hair color allows you to not only cover up red hair dye but also customize your new brunette look. We love a hair color that’s not only practical but also gives you versatile, gorgeous results.

How to Choose The Best Brown Hair Color To Dye Over Red

Shades of Brown Hair Color To Dye Over Red

1. Choose The Darkness of Brown Shade

When choosing the best brown hair color for covering up any shade of red hair dye, you need to first make sure the brown hair color is dark enough to cover the red pigment.

The general rule is to use a brown shade one or more shades darker than the red hair dye.

For example, if your hair is currently a vibrant, fire engine red, you will need to go with a dark brown shade to cover it up. Look for a level 4 or 5  when choosing the depth of your brown color.

If your hair is currently a faded red or lighter copper color, you can choose a lighter brown shade. Look for a level 5 if you want to be on the darker side or a level 6 if you want to be a lighter brown.

2. Choose Your Tone

After making sure you’ve chosen a brown shade that’s dark enough to cover up the red dye, choose the right tones to get the brown hair color you want for your final look.

If you want toned brown hair, choose an ash-brown shade. Ash contains blue and green pigments, blue neutralizes orange tones, and green neutralizes red tones.

So, this combination is perfect for neutralizing and eliminating the warm tones in red hair dye.

Here are some examples of cool-toned brown hair:

Red Hair to Level 5 Cool Ashy Brown Hair

We love this level 5 ash-toned brown, it’s dark enough to cover many different varieties of red hair dye and give you a gorgeous, dimensional new look.

level 4 ashy brown hair color over red

This level 4 ash brown would work particularly well to cover up vibrant red hair dye. A dark shade like this will ensure that the red dye is completely covered and give you a shiny, ashy brunette you’ll swoon over.

If you want a warmer shade of brown, choose a brown shade that contains neutral tones, which are a combination of gold and ash. These tones will get rid of red and leave you with a golden brown.

You could also choose warm tones like gold and copper to enhance some of the red that will be leftover from the red dye. Choosing all warm tones will leave you with a chestnut or chocolate brown.

Here are some examples of warm brown hair:

warm golden brown tone to dye over red

This is the golden glow you’ll get from choosing neutral tones for your brown hair color. We love this warm level 6 brunette and it would be a great option for covering lighter or faded red hair dye.

warm brown hair color to dye over red

This is a perfect example of embracing a bit of red pigment leftover from red hair dye. This level 6 golden copper would be a great way to use warm-toned brown hair color to cover up red hair dye and get a breathtaking chestnut masterpiece.

How To Apply Brown Hair Color Over Red Hair Dye

Apply brown hair dye over red

After you’ve chosen the perfect brown hair color to put over your current red hair dye. It’s time to apply the hair color.

Let’s go over the steps of applying hair color to make sure the red hair dye is completely covered up!

Step #1: Section the hair into four quadrants and secure with clips

Step #2: Start in one of the back quadrants and begin to apply the hair color with a bowl and brush. Working from the nape of the neck up, take ½ inch sections of hair and apply the color in each small section from root to end.

Taking small sections of hair will ensure every strand of red dye is being covered with a brown color.

Step #3: Once you’ve applied the hair color to the first back quadrant, take a gloved hand and gently work the color into the hair by moving it between your fingers and thumb.

This step will guarantee that the color is fully saturating the hair and you won’t be left with any splotchy areas where the red hair dye still shows through.

Step #4: Repeat these steps in each quadrant until all the red hair dye is completely covered with the brown hair color.

Process the color for the full recommended processing time (check manufacturer instructions). Do not rinse out the hair early, leave the color on for the entire processing time so that the brown hair color can completely cover the red!

Step #5: Rinse, shampoo, condition, and blow dry to reveal your new brown hair, you’ll find the red hair dye is long gone!

Key Things to Remember:

  • Brown is the best hair color to dye over red hair dye.
  • Pick the shade and tone of the brown hair color according to what shade, tone, and vibrancy of your current red hair.
  • Choose a shade of brown that is at least one shade darker than your red hair dye
  • Cool-toned browns will eliminate all red and warmth from your hair while warm-toned browns will give you warmer browns that can embrace some of the leftover red pigment
  • When applying brown hair color over red hair dye, concentrate on saturating each strand of hair by taking small sections and working the color into the hair. Be sure to process the brown hair color for the full amount of time in the manufacturer’s directions.

Featuring the two most popular fall colors, it doesn’t come as a surprise that red brown hair is the ultimate autumn hair color. But did you know that there’s more than one way to wear this pumpkin-spice-inspired hair shade?

Dyeing your hair at home is no easy feat. It doesn’t matter what shade you’re going for, there’s always the chance that things might go horribly wrong. The worst part is – the disastrous results may not always be visible right away.

Case in point, dyeing your hair brown, only for it to turn a horrendous shade of red a few days later. If this happens to you, the good news – there’s something you can do about it. Here’s how to prevent your brown hair color from turning red.

What Causes Brown Hair Color to Turn Red?

reasons of brown hair color to turn red

The word for this is “brassy”. There are two main reasons your brown hair may develop a warm and brassy undertone, which manifests as redness. You could either be using a color that’s too light or a color that has overly warm undertones.

If you use a color that’s too light, the underlying pigments present in your hair may react with the dye causing your mane to become brassy.

On the other hand, your hair pigments may also react with warmer-toned dye pigments causing your hair to, once again, turn reddish-orange.

How to Stop Brown Hair Color From Turning Red

If you intend to go warmer with your hair color, here are a few tips to keep your brown hue brown.

1. Choose Ash-Based Dye Kits

dye kits

Always look out for coloring products that have the word “ash” in them. Ash blonde-based dye kits have green and blue undertones, making them less likely to turn reddish-orange. Instead, think light ash-brown, cool-brown, medium ash-brown, and so forth.

If you must use warmer tones like those in the brown or brunette family, you want to choose a product with well-balanced tones.

Steer clear of kits with words like “auburn,” “gold,” and “warm.” While they may look great right after coloring, they do turn brassy once the color begins to fade and lose its initial luster.

2. Use a Toning Product

hair toning shampoo

If your hair has already started turning brassy, you can apply hair toner to stop brown hair from turning red.

A hair toning shampoo is essentially a clear, pigmented solution applied to dyed hair to fix brassy undertones or change the existing hue altogether.

Demi-permanent glaze, gloss, or color toners are particularly effective in getting rid of unwanted yellow tone,  orange and red tones.

3. Stay Out of the Sun and Chlorinated Pools

To keep your brown-colored hair color looking fresh and alluring, you need to avoid the sun and chlorine-treated water.

UV rays and chlorine are both bleaching agents that strip the hair of color pigments, causing the dye to fade.

As a result, your hair will start turning brassy. If you must venture out into the sun, ensure you keep your hair covered.

4. Use a Shower Cap or Install a Shower Filter

wearing shower cap

Washing your hair with the unfiltered water that comes from the shower exposes your hair to mineral deposits like chlorine and iron. These elements react with the pigment in your hair, causing it to dry out and fade.

After a while, your brown hair will start to turn red. To stop this from happening, always wear a shower cap, or install a shower filter to protect your hair.

5. Use Tinted Shampoo

Blue and purple shampoos are specially formulated to neutralize unwanted brassy tones. Blue shampoo is recommended for brunettes, whereas purple shampoo is ideal for blondes.

Be careful not to use these color-neutralizing products more than twice a week to prevent your hair from developing tinted hues. Alternate with color-protecting shampoo instead.

There you have it – now you can stop your brown hair color from turning red!

6. Choose The Right Developer

For individuals with brown hair who wish to achieve a more vibrant shade or cover grays, it’s generally recommended to opt for developers with lower volumes.

Using higher volume developers, like 30 or 40, on brown hair can result in unwanted warmth or brassy tones.

These developers can lift the underlying pigments more aggressively, which might lead to an undesirable outcome, especially if you’re aiming for cooler or more neutral shades.

Specifically, 5, 10, and 20 volume developers are suitable choices for brown hair color else your hair may turn red. Here’s why:

5 Volume Developer:

This developer is the weakest in strength and is often used to mix with hair toners. When coloring brown hair, a 5-volume developer can help subtly enhance the shade without causing significant lifting. It’s an excellent choice for creating a more natural-looking result.

10 Volume Developer:

A 10 volume developer is gentle and is commonly used for depositing color without substantial lifting. It’s ideal for making slight changes to the natural brown hair color, darkening it a shade or two while maintaining the hair’s warmth.

20 Volume Developer:

A 20-volume developer is a balanced option that provides moderate lifting while maintaining control over warmth.

It’s suitable for achieving noticeable changes in brown hair color, such as going a few shades lighter or adding highlights.

You’ve dyed your hair blue and have been loving it, but it’s time for a change! You may be considering red, or you’ve always wanted to be a fiery redhead and think it may be your next move.

Before you go ahead and put red hair dye over blue hair, we have a lot to go over! Unfortunately, putting red dye over blue won’t make you a redhead overnight.

Here we’ll talk about what happens when you put red hair dye over blue and what steps you can take to become a redhead after blue hair if that’s still your goal!

Key Things to Remember

  • Putting red hair dye directly over blue hair will turn your hair purple.
  • You can easily dye your blue hair purple at home by using red direct hair dye and following our simple steps.
  • If red hair is what you desire, it’s going to take some bleach and elbow grease. Go see your favorite hair stylist for your transformation from blue to red.
  • Purple and red hair need extra love because red is the quickest hair color to fade. Use color-safe products to wash and style!

Can I Put Red Hair Dye Over Blue Hair?

Yes, you can put red hair dye over blue hair, but instead of turning red, your hair will turn purple due to the color mixing. If you want red hair instead, you’ll need to bleach the blue out of your hair first, which is a task best left to a professional stylist. This process will require patience and careful maintenance to keep your hair healthy.

However, if a purple hue appeals to you, simply follow the provided steps using a red direct dye over your blue hair.

What Happens When You Put Red Hair Dye Over Blue Hair?

result of putting red dye over blue hair

To answer this question, all we have to do is go back to color theory basics. When we mix blue and red together, what color do we get?

We get purple, of course! This stays true with hair dye, if you put red hair dye over blue hair, you’ll end up with purple hair.

We love purple hair and if this color sounds like the perfect next hair color for you, your hair color journey will be fairly easy!

How to Turn Your Blue Hair Purple with Red Hair Dye

Steps to Turn Blue Hair Purple with Red Hair Dye

Step #1: Choose the Red Dye

Choose a red direct dye such as OVertone or Arctic Fox. There are a lot of different red shades out there. Choosing a deeper red will give you a deeper purple, choosing a vibrant red will give you a more vibrant purple.

Step #2: Do a strand test!

This is important to do before you commit to putting the red all over. Take a strand of hair somewhere inconspicuous. Put the red over the strand of blue hair and place it in a foil or plastic wrap. Wait for recommended processing time and rinse. Make sure you love the purple that you see on the strand before starting step 3.

Step #3: Apply the dye

Section the hair into four quadrants to keep things nice and neat. Using gloved hands, work section by section by applying the red dye. Use your fingers to emulsify the dye into the hair to ensure that all blue hair is covered and fully saturated.

Step #4: Cover Hair with Shower Cap

Place the shower cap over the hair and let the red dye sit for the recommended processing time. Usually about 20-30 minutes.

Step #5: Rinse Out

Time to rinse! Be sure to rinse red out of hair thoroughly and use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner. Red is one of the quickest colors to leave the hair so using products for color will help the red to stay in the hair and keep your purple vibrant and fresh.

Step #6: Blow Dry

Blow dry and see your formal blue hair now a gorgeous purple! Enjoy!

What Should I Do if I Still Want Red Hair While My Hair Is Blue?

Although going from blue to purple hair is easier, going from blue hair to red hair is not impossible. However, it will require more work and call for an experienced hair stylist to get you there!

The reason this process is harder is that going from blue to red hair will require bleach and lots of patience. You have to lift the blue out of the hair before the red can be applied, the only way to lift the blue out is to bleach it.

Bleach can be harsh on hair and cause damage when not used properly, which is why leaving this to a professional is so important!

The first thing you’ll want to do before booking your appointment with a stylist is to let the blue fade out of your hair as much as possible. You can speed up this process by replacing your usual shampoo with a clarifying shampoo.

Fading out that blue color will cut down on the time the bleach will need to sit on your hair, keeping it healthier!

What to Expect in The Salon?

dyeing red dye over blue hair
  1. After you and your stylist decide on the perfect shade of red for you, your stylist will perform a test strand to make sure that your hair is healthy enough to be bleached. Your stylist will put the bleach on a small strand of hair; when the hair is done processing, your stylist will check for breakage. If the hair is still healthy, you’re good to go!
  2. Bleach will be applied to all of your blue hair and watched carefully. It can take up to an hour for the blue to completely lift out of the hair. Your stylist will check on you many times to make sure the blue is coming out and that your hair remains healthy!
  3. Once the blue hair color is completely lifted out of your hair, your stylist will rinse it out and shampoo and condition it. They may even use a reparative hair mask at this step to keep the integrity of your hair.
  4. Your stylist will blow dry your hair. Your hair may be an interesting color at this point (think yellow!) but not to fear, you’re not done yet!
  5. The red hair dye will be applied over the now bleached hair. It will process for 20-30 minutes and then be rinsed out of the hair and shampooed and conditioned once again!
  6. Your hair will be blow-dried and styled, and YOU will be a gorgeous redhead! Your stylist will send you home with products that will keep your red vibrant and prevent fading.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that although your hair is now red, it was just bleached. Bleached hair needs to be treated delicately, make sure you’re using products that will add keratin back into the hair and that will give heat protection!
