Why are so many people taking the plunge to color their hair pastel blue? Are they doing it to seek attention? Maybe they want to be seen as unique.

While many people may do it to get compliments or to just stand out in the crowd, there are a number of reasons people are daring to rock this color.

Why Pastel Blue Hair

Here are 6 reasons people are choosing pastel blue hair color.

Versatility with Style!

Pastel blue hair can give a traditional hairstyle a bit of flair, dazzling onlookers from the range and complexity of blue pastel tones within the locks of your hair.

From classic bobs and up-dos to brown and black ombre curls to side braids and box braids, the pastel blue color can take a hairstyle and raise it to the next level.

Who wants to be left out of a trend? Pastel hair color is very popular these days and pastel blue has not been left out of the movement. Pinks, green, and, pastel blue have been trending upward for the last several years.

blue hair pastel

With celebrities and reality television stars like Nikki Minaj, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Kylie Jenner bringing pastel blue off of the red carpet and into mainstream society by way of sources like Instagram, pastel blue has been given fresh life!

Bucking the Trend!

blue hair

Not a follower or trendsetter? Perhaps pastel blue is not so trendy where you live?

As progressive as some areas of society may be about hairstyles and colors, there are still a few areas where pastel blue hair is considered to be bucking the trend.

Some may choose to wear pastel blue hair in an effort to deviate from social norms.

Freedom

Ever hear the phrase “freedom of expression” leveraged? Nothing professes an understanding of the freedom to be who you are like a brazen hairstyle or audacious hair color.

Women are kicking down the walls of normalcy to tell the world who they are and what they stand for with the color of their hair.

Whether they change it monthly or annually, they are using colors like pastel blue to tell their story, daring anyone to tell them they cannot wear their hair color.

Desire to Do Something Different

There’s the freedom to be blue and there’s the desire to simply do something different.

The desire to do something different with our hair can be the direct result of a relationship that has ended, the desire to have a fresh beginning, or the will to step outside of your comfort zone.

What better way to take a journey into a land of difference than wearing blue hair?

Evoking a Response

While some might be looking to gain attention with a daring hairstyle choice, there are those who are looking to evoke some sort of reaction from friends, family, or even complete strangers.

Still not convinced you should take the leap with one of your greatest personal accessories? The good news is that you never have to take a permanent leap with your hair.

There are a few hair dyes on the market that will bleed and rinse out of your hair faster than others so that you are not locked into your newfound blue hair for more than a couple of weeks.

However, if you are not a risk-taker, there are a number of pastel blue wigs on the market that you can easily don and take off when you’re not feeling so into the blue.

Although blue flowers are rare, create one using the hair! Dye the hip-length mane in an icy blue tint with platinum blonde highlights. Take the side strands and twine them into loopy braids. Twist them around to create a unique floral updo with white flowers.

18. Dreamy Appeal

This look is difficult to ignore. Blonde women can achieve it with ease by merging the light roots into the pastel blue color. Curl up the strands of the short bob covering an eye. A floral headpiece tops off the style.

19. Frozen Blue Updo

Recreate Lady Gaga’s iconic red carpet look by dying the hair in a chrome blonde hue with frozen blue chunks peeking through. Roll up the hair at the top into an updo with a single curled-up strand sitting on one side.

shaved side pastel blue hair

Go an extra length to create this bold faded haircut. The top is kept quite long to contrast with the shaved sides. Combine vivid royal blue roots with pastel blue hair that is back-combed and tousled on one side.

FAQs

How long can pastel blue hair last?

It generally lasts six weeks, but it can be longer or shorter depending on how you care for your hair. To extend the life of pastel blue hair, try washing your hair in cool or lukewarm water as infrequently as possible.

Can women with tan skin dye their hair pastel blue?

Absolutely! Your skin’s undertone is more critical than how dark your skin is when choosing pastel shades.

Which skin tone is compatible with pastel blue hair?

Generally, cooler undertones work for more shades of blue than warmer undertones. If you’re careful, you can get a shade that looks good with any skin tone.

Consider a richer pastel blue, such as aqua, if you have warmer undertones. If you have cooler undertones, a frost blue may look better.

Is pastel blue hair a warm or cool shade?

Pastel blue hair is almost always a cool shade. However, some shades are warmer than others. If you want a warmer pastel shade, stay on the side of aqua.

Does pastel blue hair require bleaching?

It depends! If you want pastel blue hair, you need to think about what color you’re starting at. If your hair is a light to a medium shade of blonde, you will probably not need to bleach your hair.

Darker colors or hair that has already been dyed a vibrant color will need bleaching before switching to pastel.

What color does pastel blue hair fade into?

It depends on what other notes of color were in the dye. Cooler shades of pastel blue fade into a blue-gray or blonde color with time. Warmer shades typically have some green notes, and these become more pronounced as the blue fades away.

Is pastel blue hair color high maintenance?

Any pastel hair color will take more maintenance than a richer color. However, you can still do a good job maintaining your color if you are careful.

Try using products to style instead of heat, washing your hair in cooler water as infrequently as possible, and using color-safe shampoo.

If you’ve dyed your hair blue and are ready for new hair color, you may be wondering what color can you dye hair after blue and are a little nervous about the transition. We know that once you’ve dyed your hair a fun, vibrant color like blue, transitioning to a new hair color can be a little tricky. However, it doesn’t have to be hard as long as we don’t overcomplicate things!

As a professional stylist, I’ll share the best colors to dye over blue hair so you know the options and choose the right hair color.

Best Colors to Dye Over Blue Hair

Fashion Colors

Jumping from one fashion color to another isn’t as hard as you think. Since your hair was already bleached to allow your hair to be blue, you do not need to bleach again. Simply apply the new fashion color over the blue.

If you still want to stick with a vibrant, fashion color here are the options that will work best after blue hair:

Deep Purple

Color to Dye Over Blue Hair - Purple

A deep purple dye works great over blue hair because purple is a combination of red and blue. The already blue hair will serve as a great canvas to put purple on top of. The blue will only enhance the gorgeous tones of purple.

Using a deeper purple such as an eggplant or true violet will ensure the blue is completely covered up.

Dark Green

Color to Dye Over Blue Hair - Dark Green

Just like purple, green is another great choice after blue hair because green is a combination of yellow and blue.

Again, the blue will serve as the perfect canvas to put green over. We love a darker green like forest or emerald so that the blue won’t peek through after coloring.

Turquoise

Color to Dye Over Blue Hair - turquoise

Turquoise is a fashion color that’s a little less common but we’d love to see more of it out in the world!

Turquoise is a beautiful combo of green and blue, the blue will only make the turquoise hair color more stunning and rich! You could also look for hair colors like jade and teal which are in the same color family.

Pro tip: When switching from blue to a new fashion color, let the blue fade out of the hair as much as possible before applying the new color. This will allow the new color to look super fresh and vibrant. Speed up the fading process by replacing your regular shampoo with a clarifying shampoo until you’re ready to color your hair.

Natural Colors

Sometimes you’re ready to ditch the funky hair and tone it down a bit. There’s nothing wrong with a natural hue! If you’re ready to get back to a more natural hair color, these are colors that will look best after blue hair:

Black

Color to Dye Over Blue Hair - Jet Black

Black hair color is a timeless classic and with a blue base, you’ll get a true black that’s sure to turn heads. Black is also the darkest color you can be and it will have no problem covering up that blue hair color.

Having the blue underneath black hair color will also give it staying power and your hair color will go longer without fading!

Dark Cool Brown

Color to Dye Over Blue Hair - Dark Brown

You don’t have to be the darkest black hair color to cover up blue. A dark brown will also be able to cover blue! The one thing you’ll want to do in order to make sure the blue will be completely covered is to let the blue hair color fade as much as possible before applying the brown!

If the color you want is not listed above.

The hair colors that were talked about above are the easiest colors to transition to after you’ve colored your hair blue.

Of course, these aren’t the only options! When it comes to going lighter after blue hair, say you want to be a blonde or a baby pink, you will need to enlist the help of your hairstylist and be ready to go through a color correction.

The blue will most likely need to be lifted out of the hair using bleach and will be a multi-step process. If you’re thinking this is the route you’d like to take, book a consultation with your stylist!

Quick Facts

  • You have many options for different hair colors after coloring your hair blue
  • You can opt for another fun, fashion color or something more natural
  • Darker colors will be the best option when coloring over blue
  • If you want lighter hair you’ll need to see a stylist for a color correction

You’ve dyed your hair blue and have been loving it, but it’s time for a change! You may be considering red, or you’ve always wanted to be a fiery redhead and think it may be your next move.

Before you go ahead and put red hair dye over blue hair, we have a lot to go over! Unfortunately, putting red dye over blue won’t make you a redhead overnight.

Here we’ll talk about what happens when you put red hair dye over blue and what steps you can take to become a redhead after blue hair if that’s still your goal!

Key Things to Remember

  • Putting red hair dye directly over blue hair will turn your hair purple.
  • You can easily dye your blue hair purple at home by using red direct hair dye and following our simple steps.
  • If red hair is what you desire, it’s going to take some bleach and elbow grease. Go see your favorite hair stylist for your transformation from blue to red.
  • Purple and red hair need extra love because red is the quickest hair color to fade. Use color-safe products to wash and style!

Can I Put Red Hair Dye Over Blue Hair?

Yes, you can put red hair dye over blue hair, but instead of turning red, your hair will turn purple due to the color mixing. If you want red hair instead, you’ll need to bleach the blue out of your hair first, which is a task best left to a professional stylist. This process will require patience and careful maintenance to keep your hair healthy.

However, if a purple hue appeals to you, simply follow the provided steps using a red direct dye over your blue hair.

What Happens When You Put Red Hair Dye Over Blue Hair?

result of putting red dye over blue hair

To answer this question, all we have to do is go back to color theory basics. When we mix blue and red together, what color do we get?

We get purple, of course! This stays true with hair dye, if you put red hair dye over blue hair, you’ll end up with purple hair.

We love purple hair and if this color sounds like the perfect next hair color for you, your hair color journey will be fairly easy!

How to Turn Your Blue Hair Purple with Red Hair Dye

Steps to Turn Blue Hair Purple with Red Hair Dye

Step #1: Choose the Red Dye

Choose a red direct dye such as OVertone or Arctic Fox. There are a lot of different red shades out there. Choosing a deeper red will give you a deeper purple, choosing a vibrant red will give you a more vibrant purple.

Step #2: Do a strand test!

This is important to do before you commit to putting the red all over. Take a strand of hair somewhere inconspicuous. Put the red over the strand of blue hair and place it in a foil or plastic wrap. Wait for recommended processing time and rinse. Make sure you love the purple that you see on the strand before starting step 3.

Step #3: Apply the dye

Section the hair into four quadrants to keep things nice and neat. Using gloved hands, work section by section by applying the red dye. Use your fingers to emulsify the dye into the hair to ensure that all blue hair is covered and fully saturated.

Step #4: Cover Hair with Shower Cap

Place the shower cap over the hair and let the red dye sit for the recommended processing time. Usually about 20-30 minutes.

Step #5: Rinse Out

Time to rinse! Be sure to rinse red out of hair thoroughly and use a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner. Red is one of the quickest colors to leave the hair so using products for color will help the red to stay in the hair and keep your purple vibrant and fresh.

Step #6: Blow Dry

Blow dry and see your formal blue hair now a gorgeous purple! Enjoy!

What Should I Do if I Still Want Red Hair While My Hair Is Blue?

Although going from blue to purple hair is easier, going from blue hair to red hair is not impossible. However, it will require more work and call for an experienced hair stylist to get you there!

The reason this process is harder is that going from blue to red hair will require bleach and lots of patience. You have to lift the blue out of the hair before the red can be applied, the only way to lift the blue out is to bleach it.

Bleach can be harsh on hair and cause damage when not used properly, which is why leaving this to a professional is so important!

The first thing you’ll want to do before booking your appointment with a stylist is to let the blue fade out of your hair as much as possible. You can speed up this process by replacing your usual shampoo with a clarifying shampoo.

Fading out that blue color will cut down on the time the bleach will need to sit on your hair, keeping it healthier!

What to Expect in The Salon?

dyeing red dye over blue hair
  1. After you and your stylist decide on the perfect shade of red for you, your stylist will perform a test strand to make sure that your hair is healthy enough to be bleached. Your stylist will put the bleach on a small strand of hair; when the hair is done processing, your stylist will check for breakage. If the hair is still healthy, you’re good to go!
  2. Bleach will be applied to all of your blue hair and watched carefully. It can take up to an hour for the blue to completely lift out of the hair. Your stylist will check on you many times to make sure the blue is coming out and that your hair remains healthy!
  3. Once the blue hair color is completely lifted out of your hair, your stylist will rinse it out and shampoo and condition it. They may even use a reparative hair mask at this step to keep the integrity of your hair.
  4. Your stylist will blow dry your hair. Your hair may be an interesting color at this point (think yellow!) but not to fear, you’re not done yet!
  5. The red hair dye will be applied over the now bleached hair. It will process for 20-30 minutes and then be rinsed out of the hair and shampooed and conditioned once again!
  6. Your hair will be blow-dried and styled, and YOU will be a gorgeous redhead! Your stylist will send you home with products that will keep your red vibrant and prevent fading.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that although your hair is now red, it was just bleached. Bleached hair needs to be treated delicately, make sure you’re using products that will add keratin back into the hair and that will give heat protection!

When you decide to dye your hair blue, you have an idea of how it may look. However, many people dye their hair only to find it turned green.

If your hair turned green after dying blue, you don’t need to panic. There is a good reason why it happened and some things you can do to fix it.

Why Your Blue Hair Turned Green?

If you have dark hair to begin with, you most likely bleached your hair before dying it. Since bleached hair often looks yellow, it can cause your hair to turn green when you add blue dye to it.

When you dye your hair a dark shade, it will look perfect when you are done. Over the next few days, the color will lighten as you wash it. Eventually, the color will become so light that you will have to dye it again to get that same level of darkness.

The same is true for hair that has been dyed blue. You bleached your hair before you dyed it. So after you wash it a few times, the yellow of your bleached hair begins to show through. The tint of yellow looked at through faded blue will be green.

Fixing Hair That Turned Green After Dying Blue

If you are upset about the green tint in your hair, there are a few things you can do to get rid of it.

First, decide if you want to cover the green or if you want to try some different colors. You may also decide to get your hair back to the bleached tone so you can dye it a darker, more traditional color.

#1. Anti-Dandruff & Clarifying Shampoo

How to Fix Hair Turned Green After Dying Blue - Shampoo

Although your instinct may dictate bleaching to see if the green goes away, bleaching your hair again could damage it since it removes so much moisture.

The easiest way to get back to that color is to wash it with an anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoo. The corrosive chemicals in it that help rid you of dandruff will also strip the dye.

However, it will not be an immediate fix and could take up to six washes to accomplish, so be patient.

#2. Baking Soda

You might try a baking soda treatment. Mixing baking soda with water and massaging it into your hair can strip away the dye. It could take a few times to get the desired result, but the method is proven.

Baking soda and dandruff shampoo can dry out your hair and cause damage. Be sure to condition your hair well afterward.

#3. Use a Toner

How to Fix Hair Turned Green After Dying Blue - toning

Using a toner can help to color-correct your hair. It adds tones to your hair that will help to cancel out the ones you don’t want. You should choose tones that are on the opposite side of the spectrum in the color wheel for the best results.

#4. Color Filler

A color filler will create a base for your hair, turning the yellow-bleached hair into a shade of blue.

Then, when your blue dye begins to fade, the color that shows through will be blue. This will save you a lot of embarrassment and help keep you from panicking.

#5. Dye Your Hair Again

How to Fix Hair Turned Green After Dying Blue - Dye Again

The thing about dying your hair is that you have to keep doing it if you want to keep the look. If the color in your hair has faded enough to appear green, then dying it all over again could be your best option.

You might dye it the same shade of blue again, or you could try something entirely different.

Another shade of blue would cover the green well, but so would other colors like red, orange, turquoise, violet, or fuchsia.

Final Thoughts

It can be jarring to look in the mirror and see that the blue hair you were so proud of has started turning green. However, it is scientifically normal for it to happen. Don’t worry because there are quite a few things you can do to correct the problem and prevent it from happening again.

FAQs

Here are some of the most common questions when your hair turned green after dying it blue.

How do you get green tones out of blue hair?

To get rid of the green tones, add some pink toning conditioner. The pink tone is on the opposite side of the spectrum from green and will cancel it out.

Does ketchup get green out of your hair?

Ketchup is a solution for getting green out of your hair caused by chlorine after swimming. It will not help in this situation.

A combination of dark hair and blue strands is absolutely mesmerizing. Actually, there’s a lot you can do to spice things up a little bit including blue highlights in brown hair.

Women with dark hair often feel they’re left out of trendy styles because it’s difficult to change the color entirely without damage, brittleness, rough texture, and other problems. Read on to learn more about this style and to see ten amazing suggestions to try.

How to Style Brown Hair with Blue Highlights

Brown Hair with Blue Highlights

So you decided to try brown hairstyles with blue highlights, but aren’t quite sure how to do it? Getting highlights in blue color generally requires the same concept as with any other color. You need a tinting brush, box dye, a hair-lightening kit, a mixing bowl, gloves, the old towel, of course, tin foil or plastic wrap, and a conditioner.

Before you start working on the highlights, make sure to style your hair as you would normally do. Why? The reason is simple; it would give you a better idea of which strands to dye. Mix hair color according to instructions on the packaging and determine the hair sections you’ll color.

Now, start coloring carefully and wrap each colored section into the foil. Rinse after 20 to 30 minutes or as long as it’s specified on the box.

Doing highlights on your own can be tricky and stressful which is why it may be more useful to let a professional do it. The hairdresser knows what style suits you best, and sections to color to frame your face, but he or she can also give you highlights without using foil.

You can style your highlights any way you want including edgy or more demure looks. It all comes down to your personal preferences. In terms of shades, you can go for electric or striking blue color or darker, more subtle hues.

There are several ways to dye black hair blue for black girls:

Direct Dye: Direct dyes are colors that stain the surface, barely penetrating the hair shaft. They make no use of ammonia, peroxide or color developer.

Direct dyes can be found in vibrant blue shades that wouldn’t require bleaching even on the darkest of hair.

Bleach: The most common way to get blue hair is to lift your hair color to the lightest shade by bleaching and then dying it with light blue hair color. This will ensure you get the exact shade of blue you want, as seen on the box if you’re using a box dye.

Color Chalk: For pastel colors, you can try color chalking. It’s a very simple technique that doesn’t require bleaching or anything of the sort.

If running chalk over your hair is time-consuming, you could opt for liquid chalk dyes. They are basically a liquid form of colored chalk and can be easily washed out.

Once you have attained those lighter tips on your black hair, make sure that those golden locks are healthy and ready for the next step in the process. Applying blue dye to your hair too soon could damage hair and lead to unexpected breakage.

Consider undergoing a color test before full application of that blue dye on the ends of your hair. Is there a best way to apply blue dye to the tips of your black hair? Opinions vary. If daring to undertake this process on your own, some have tried the ponytail approach to help focus the application process.

Others suggest sectioning your hair with rubber bands into two broad sections with a part down the middle and placing rubber bands on the ends of your hair to point that only a few inches remain free on the ends.

Experts will tell you however that the better process is to section your hair and apply the solution to the ends of your hair all around your head as you might any other dye – except focusing on the ends of your hair.
